Online Exams Overview
Online Exams are delivered via the Canvas Learning Management System. This allows for faculty to administer assessments to students electronically.
Depending on circumstances, students may be able to take these electronic exams off campus using their own computer. To maintain the integrity of the exam process, Sonoran University faculty may opt to deliver exams using Respondus LockDown Browser technology.
The process works as follows:
- A faculty member prepares and publishes an exam in Canvas.
- In Canvas, the exam is configured for administration via LockDown Browser.
- Students install the LockDown Browser product to their personal computer (that includes a webcam).
- Students use LockDown Browser to access navigate to Canvas, their course, and, finally, to their exam.
- LockDown Browser may prompt the student to sign an electronic consent, take a picture of his/her state ID.
- LockDown Browser may also prompt the student to rotate their computer to record their immediate surroundings.
- LockDown Browser will restrict the student computer from accessing any content other than the exam.
- LockDown Browser will record non-standard student activity (leaving camera view, reviewing notes, reviewing mobile phone, etc.) that might indicate access to prohibited content during an exam. These video snippets can be reviewed by the faculty member for subsequent conversation and action. Note: Only suspicious activity is flagged for review.
Once student submits the exam, the LockDown Browser re-enables all normal function of the student's computer.
The LockDown Browser technology supports flexibility for the student (student can use his/her laptop) while also supporting the College's academic honesty policy.
Hardware/software requirements for LockDown Browser
LockDown Browser will run on Windows or Mac-based laptops or desktops having an internal or external webcam.
